The everyday adventures of Nolan and Griffin

Update to Parenting Pickle

When I went up to get Nolan up on Tuesday morning, he was already wearing his ensemble.  I had decided I was not going to say anything.  Nolan then asked if I thought his outfit looked OK. In that split second moment I debated what to do.  I told him I thought a solid colored shirt might look better with those shorts, but he could decide if he wanted to change or not. He thought about it for a moment and then went into the closet and chose the white shirt.  In my opinion, a much better looking option!

I have to admit I was glad, but it does not mean I have not thought about it since then. I told a parent of a child client of mine yesterday about the importance of letting children make choices when they can. I told her about how empowering decision making can be for children, yet in the back of my mind I could not stop thinking about the Dallas Cowboys jersey and plaid shorts. Lesson learned for me too.

The revised “look.”

It is all about the options!!!

I know I have blogged about this before here and here, but I just cannot help but mention it again. So many special things Nolan says or does seems to be slipping by the wayside as he matures and grows.  I sometimes worry if I will remember all the “little” things.  The moments that I do not expect, the things he randomly says that make me smile, or the little routines or fascinations of his that he shares with us.   No doubt our memories cannot hold it all.

It has been quite some time since Nolan has laid out clothes like this, but imagine my surprise when James and I went up to check on the boys before we went to bed, and saw that he had been shopping in his closet for his school clothes for the next day.  Needless to say we both appreciated the smile.

The night’s assortment seemed to consist of an athletic wear/Texas Tech theme.

(And yes, he is asleep and yes, I turned on the lights to take the picture)

Thank you Nolan for keeping up some of your old traditions!
