The everyday adventures of Nolan and Griffin

Weekend at the Gaylord (Part one)

A couple weeks ago my parents, my aunt, uncle and two cousins, and James, Nolan, Griffin and I went to the Gaylord for a Christmasy weekend.  If you have never been to the Gaylord at Christmas, it is a MUST! In addition to all of the beautiful decorations (1.5 MILLION lights, 12,000 ornaments, etc), there are many family fun events to enjoy.

Upon checking in we went to my parents room. They upgraded to a room with a balcony overlooking the atrium. Worth the extra money!

Once we were settled we went exploring. Viewing all the train displays.

My college roommate and her family happened to be there the same weekend. Nolan and Brady. Griffin and Belle.

Year after year the main attraction at Gaylord is Ice! Over 40 artisans from China are flown in to create this magical wonderland all in Ice. Over 2 million pounds of ice are used. Amazing!  PIctures absolutely do not do it justice. The theme this year was Shrek! The day we were there is was THREE DEGREES! Thankfully we were bundled up and were not completely frozen.

Waiting in line!

Can you believe this is all ice?

G looked so funny in this parka. It went all the way to his knees! He was not really a fan.

Halfway through Ice they have slides you can go down. So fun!! This is Nolan who rode it over and over again. No shock there!

Merry Main Street

Tongiht we took the boys to “Merry Main Street” in Downtown Frisco.  Each weekend in December, the City of Frisco has fun family holiday activities planned around the square.  The main atraction is the 185,000 plus lights on all the buildings in downtown choregraphed to music. It is quite the show!

A few of the lighted buildings.

One of the adjadent buildings had a large train display. Both boys love trains!

While James waited in line for the snow tubing, the boys made sugar (sand) art bottles.

The bounce house is always a must. Griffin has come a long way. He used to be scared to death of them. Now he wants to brave it each time no matter how much of a zoo it is inside (which it always is)!

photo 3.JPG photo 4.JPG

The highlight for Nolan was the snow tubing. James had fun too!  Poor G was not tall enough.  James and I were ready to fork over a small fortune for this only to learn it was FREE! Isn’t that unbelievable?

We ended the night with a ride on the Trackless Train. This had the longest line of all. The sand art that the boys had made earlier was actually pure colored sugar. We decided the to let the boys sample some to pass the time. Within about two minutes of G gulping down a couple of bites, he was literally running around in circles over and over again while laughing hysterically. It was like he was drugged! I wish I had videoed it. It was hilarious.

Tacky The Penguin Party!

Today was Nolan’s class party. The irony is Griffin’s class party must be about Jesus. Nolan’s class party must make no mention of anything related to Christmas or Hannukah.  So what is the party about? Penguins! It actually was very cute and based upon the book, Tacky the Penguin.  Teachers, parents, and children were asked to dress “tacky” today and boy did some kids go all out! Nolan wore a plaid button down and camo pants. When I got to his classroom he had turned his shirt backwards (conforming to what other boys had done).

The party began with reading the book.

PIcture of a few boys in the class.  James and I have identified there is another side of Nolan we call “friend Nolan.” “Friend Nolan” is hyper, very silly, and acts very different than the Nolan we know. This picture sums up “Friend Nolan.” Based on how I saw him acting at school with his buddies, I am shocked he has NEVER gotten into trouble ever at school!. In Nolan’s defense most of the boys in his class were acting the same way. This is a phase I will NOT miss!

And finally, creating their own Tacky the Penguin

Prescott Thankful Turkey

I love traditions particiularly at the holidays and this year we implemented a new one. The Thankful Turkey. For the last couple of weeks James, Nolan, Griffin and I have added feathers (almost) daily with a word of something we are thankful for on it. I have loved to hear what the boys are thankful for. It has led to many great discussions with the boys about what it means to be thankful,  all the different types of things we should be thankful for, how many others live with so much less, and the importance of reflecting and appreciating all we have.

The first feather Nolan wrote said he was thankful for was “Freedom” and Griffin said “God.”  I told James we must not be doing that bad of a job as parents!

Our turkey may have started without any feathers, but now we are reminded of all the things we are truly thankful for. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of our lives, it is very important to stop and remember what all we truly have.

Flower Mound Pumpkin Patch!

One day two weeks ago I decided to pull Nolan out of school a bit early and we headed to the pumpkin patch. Once again, our weekends are typically so busy we had not found the time to fit it in. With Halloween approaching and the end to pumpkin patch season, I decided why not? Unfortunately James was not able to join us. As with the State Fair, the Flower Mound Pumpkin Patch was signficantly less crowded on a weekday and made for a much more enjoyable time. Last year we went to this same pumpkin patch on a Saturday and what a difference!

Hay Ride time!  This pumpkin patch has character wood cut-outs everywhere..even on the hay ride! The boys loved the hay ride so much, we rode it twice. Last year the line was so long we were not able to ride it at all. If only we could do everything during a school day! :)

Funnel cake time! Do you know this pumpkin patch also sells the famous Fletcher’s Corny dogs from the State Fair? That should tell you the “pull” this pumpkin patch has!

One of the things I found so interesting is that this pumpkin patch has multiple bounce houses (located right next to this merry go round actually) and this was more popular than anything. Takes you back to the good ole playground days doesn’t it? I had to finally pull Nolan off. (He is in the black pants in the center of the picture.) He loved it. I, on the other hand, felt sick just watching it go round and round.

So  many fun things to do!
