The everyday adventures of Nolan and Griffin

The Best Laid Plans

I knew before we even went it probably was not a good idea. We were running late already. We needed to leave for swimming in a little over an hour, but yet we went anyway. Why do I always do this to myself??

We are going to Disney World in November and, because the temperatures in Florida are still in the 80′s during that time of the year, the boys will need shorts. No problem for Nolan. Griffin on the other hand is of concern. The concern of course is that he is growing like a weed. In the last couple of months he has outgrown almost three sizes of clothes. I knew five months from now, his 24 month clothes were not going to work. I needed to buy for Disney World now. I had already seen Fall merchandise making its way to stores. I needed to buy before the summer clothes were replaced.

I had been emailed a 20% off coupon from Carter’s which expired today. I wanted to use the coupon, but of course when I went to print it out, I had already deleted it. Thank goodness for a Google search as I was able to find it online. (Looking back on it now, I am not quite sure why I was so adamant about using that coupon.) Anyway, the original plan was to leave by 10:00 so we would be back in plenty of time to get ready for swimming. At 10:30, after locating another coupon, getting the boys loaded in the car, etc. we were on our way. (To our advantage Carter’s is about ten minutes away.)

Picky Eater

Although Griffin has become fairly good at eating finger foods, he is extremely selective on what he will eat. If it is not a cheerio, Gerber fruit puff, or Honey Comb, he pretty much will not eat it. He absolutely refuses to let us put something in his mouth. He has to do it himself to have complete control over the situation. He always surveys the table top before deciding what he will put in his mouth. There can be all kinds of different foods to choose from and maybe only one cheerio, and that is what he will put in his mouth. It is extremely frustrating and slightly concerning. We have tried all different ways to “trick” him and he seems to always be on top of his game!!

Nolan’s Magic Ears

Nolan was born with magical ears. Did you know that? Well, they are. They have these special filters on them. These filters screen out anything they hear that pertains to being responsible, doing chores, following instructions, answering questions that are deemed boring and not “important,” and so on. Ironically they ALWAYS hear things like “Do you want to get an ice cream? Do you want to go to the Lego store? and Do you want to go to the water park?”

This “issue” surfaces multiple times daily and drives James and I crazy. It seems to manifest itself in two ways. The first being when something is said to Nolan and we are met with a blank stare, no eye blinking, no movement, nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. No comprende. It’s like we are speaking Russian. Just complete silence. It’s really the only time we hear this silence from Nolan come to think of it. The second way is observed something like this. “Nolan do you want a turkey sandwich or peanut butter and jelly?” To which Nolan will respond, “Mommy, let’s go the park.” CRAZY MAKING I say! It is like nails on a chalk board and it happens over and over again every. single. day.

I recently saw a quote that sums it up.

If you do not want your children to hear what you are saying, talk directly to them.

EXACTLY!

RIGHT ON SISTER!

AMEN!

The only thing that brings me comfort about Nolan’s magical ears is that we must not be the only ones going through this. This absolutely brilliant statement was published in a book about all time favorite quotes. We are not alone right? Oh please say yes!

Healed in Under Five Minutes

This morning when I went into Nolan’s room to wake him up he said,

“Mommy I have a bad cold. I think I may have a disease. I don’t feel good.” He proceeded to explain his symptoms.

A couple of minutes later, now in the kitchen, he asked his usual first question of the day.

“What are we doing today?” I proceeded to tell him he would be spending the day with Mimi, had swim lessons, AND that tomorrow we were going to see Olivia. I reminded him that she was looking forward to playing “Princess and King” with him. I added, “BUT if you do not feel good, you know with your disease, we may just have to stay here.”

Nolan paused for a moment and then said with a certainty in his voice, “Well aaaactually, being sick comes and goes, and it has gone away all right.” He raced off.

And with that, he was cured (from that disease and all).
